I started playing the Trumpet at the age of 7,
encouraged by my dad who played the saxophone. Joined Ashington Colliery
band at the age of 9 with the assistance of the then euphonium player,
Morris Preistley who was the peripatetic teacher for brass players in
school. Started off on 3rd cornet sitting next to Ned Cummings and his pipe
in the now demolished Preistmans Institute, working my way up to bumper up
and then onto op0 where I still am now. (Due to the fact that no one else
wanted toplay it)!
I owe most of my skill in playing to one
person and the best Euphonium player I have had the pleasure to listen to,
the one and only Bill Lister. Although he is no longer with us he will
never be forgotten.
Most memorable moments:
Playing at the Albert Hall
Competing ion the championship section
20 years in the mining industry
The fact that I am one of the very few who
have only been a member of one band through thick and thin. (A true
Ashingtonian)!
Favourite test peices: High Peak and The
Frogs.
