Started playing when I was 10 years old. Got my dad Tommy to
get a cornet from Ashington for me to have a go.
Joined the contest band two years later where
I played in my first ever Miners Picnic and was chuffed to bits as we won
the contest and I also won the 3rd cornet prize!
I progressed up the ranks thanks to the hard
teaching of my poor Dad, (No wonder his hair is white now!) until I reached
bumper up to the one and only Brian Cameron. I learned a lot from Brian
(Such as, "It doesn't matter what notes you play, as long as they
fit"!!! only kidding, he was great).
I got the chance to move onto Solo horn for a
short while and then I moved back onto cornet for about two weeks until a
Euphonium place came up when Stuart Lawson left the band.
I've never looked back since. I love playing
the Euph and don't know why I bothered playing anything else!
I Moved to Principle Euphonium only last year,
and with guidance from Joe and Nigel I hope to be there a long time.
Favorite player: Michael Dodds - Grimethorpe Principal Euph
Most memorable moment: Winning the 2002 Area contest. First contest as
Principal
Worst memorable moment: When my water key spring snapped just before a solo
whilst playing repiano cornet in Blackpool. (Luckily Kerry had a peg
handy!!!)
