I began playing at 11 years old when I started secondary school at Bothal school, Ashington. As my father was a mineworker at Pegswood Colliery I was able to joint the local colliery band. I started in the junior band and progressed to the senoir band. My first official contest was at Blackpool where I played 3rd cornet and the test peice was "Scheherazade". During my time at Pegswood I played various instruments including Horn, Baritone, Euphonium and Trombone.

I joined Ashington in 1981 playing Baritone. Except for one brief spell on Euphonium the Baritone has been my main instrument.
