Started learning to play on a whim, (mainly because my dad would not let me join the local juvenile Jazz Band) when dinosaurs were in ankle socks. I was taught the 'basics' of playing by the late, great George Rowell and, as music lessons in schools had not been invented, I learned anything else musical 'on the hoof', so to speak. I eventually became Secretary of Washington Band, which was a job I was very proud to do, and I enjoyed it very much. One of my early memories of Ashington was at the Miners Picnic and we were asked if there were many bairnds doon'th park - our answer was, no, it is a straight road! Overall I have enjoyed my banding through the years, although there have been many ups and downs; I am am enjoying my banding at Ashington. Let's face it, give or take an "ansbeck's", I am back where I started.
